Do you want to be successful in life? Do you want a big house, nice car, loving family, and a household pet named Mr. Biggles? Academia is a great place to start your path to success. A college degree can be a helpful tool in getting that dream job, and the knowledge that comes with that degree can help sustain you in all aspects of life; but first you must earn that degree. I have had many of my peers agree with me when I say earning a degree is no easy task. At times I want to compare my efforts to balance my academic career with all other aspects of my life to juggling a bowling ball, a rusty knife, a chainsaw, and a flaming stick (warning: do not try this at home). So, are we doomed to struggle for our success? No, of course not. Is there a way to clear the debris from the path to success and make our lives a little more manageable? Yes, there is. Here are a few helpful suggestions that can help make life a little easier:
- Seek out a mentor for guidance and advice.
- Create a list of long term goals.
- Create a list of short term goals (this list of goals will constantly need to be revised).
- Keep a “to do” list on you at all times (will constantly need to be revised).
- Keep a journal that you can use to reflect on all of your experiences.
- Record all important dates in a calendar.
- Be curious; ask questions.
- Familiarize yourself with technology (laptops, smartphones, etc.).
- Do not procrastinate.
- Get enough sleep (your health is more important than a deadline).
- Communicate with your instructors (ask for explanation when confused, look into tutoring possibilities, possible mentorship, etc.).
- Stay positive and never give up (this one is important!).
Although some of these suggestions may seem like extra work, after implementing them into your life you will discover a refreshing new level of organization and efficiency that will help you reach your goals and achieve the success that you are striving for.
