Each workshop is aimed at improving students’ overall academic success. There are a total of 9 different topics covered during the course of the two days. Seven workshops will be offered each day.
Topics include improving reading comprehension, learning styles, math anxiety, note taking, overcoming procrastination, stress & mental health, studying for the sciences, test anxiety, and time management.

Improving Reading Comprehension
Tuesday, October 15, 2013
1 pm – 2 pm
Am I supposed to know all the information in my text book? Is there a more effective way to read a text or assigned reading? Learn the trick and tips that make text reading less of a fight while increasing comprehension and reducing reading fatigue.
Facilitated by Michael Kassel, Ph.D.

Learning Styles
Tuesday, October 15, 2013
9 am – 10 am
Have you ever sat through a lesson plan in class, and even though you tried to pay attention, you didn’t remember as much as your friend did? Not everyone learns the same way. The way you studied or the way the lesson was taught might be right for your friend, but not for you. And if you studied a different way, you may find the learning process easier. This workshop will give you the tools to effectively identify your learning style and apply it towards improving your study skills.
Facilitated by Sam MacFarland, Academic
Advisor and Career Counselor.

Math Anxiety
Tuesday, October 15, 2013
11 am – 12 pm
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
9 am – 10 am
Math anxiety can result from several reasons, two of which are: (1) the “mile wide, inch deep” mathematics curriculum in this country is often taught as a mysterious, memorized, rule-based subject that does not make sense to many people; (2) individuals may have been bullied, embarrassed, or deeply frustrated at some point while trying to learn the subject. In this workshop we will address these two common causes of math anxiety and discuss ways in which individuals can learn to deal their math anxiety. Facilitated by Professor Matt Wyneken, the coordinator of the Elementary Education Mathematics program at UM-Flint. Dr. Wyneken works with both pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers, helping them make sense of basic mathematics so they can confidently and effectively help children to do the same.

Note Taking
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
1 pm – 2pm
How much should you write down during a class? How do you write and listen at the same time? Is there a more effective way to organize notes? These questions and more will be answered in our noteworthy, note taking workshop.
Facilitated by Michael Kassel, coordinator of the Academic Enrichment Center/Tutorial Services and Lecturer in History and American Culture. Dr. Kassel is a co-organizer of the “Get Ready for Success” workshop series.

Why are Career Fairs important?

Career fairs are important because they are a fantastic way to meet potential employers and to learn more about them. Employers are happy to provide information, and are eager to find new employees. People who are confident, assertive, and impressive are likely to leave long-lasting impressions. Where else can you see so many employers in one location, or be seen by them? This opportunity provides you with a chance to explore career opportunities that you may never have thought about. Show your personal qualities to the employer, ask questions, and get involved. This fair will be held in the Recreation Center on Wednesday, October 16th from 12-3pm.  Hope to see you there! RSVP today at careerconnection.umflint.edu.
