Math Anxiety
Tuesday, October 15, 2013
11 am – 12 pm
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
9 am – 10 am
Math anxiety can result from several reasons, two of which are: (1) the “mile wide, inch deep” mathematics curriculum in this country is often taught as a mysterious, memorized, rule-based subject that does not make sense to many people; (2) individuals may have been bullied, embarrassed, or deeply frustrated at some point while trying to learn the subject. In this workshop we will address these two common causes of math anxiety and discuss ways in which individuals can learn to deal their math anxiety. Facilitated by Professor Matt Wyneken, the coordinator of the Elementary Education Mathematics program at UM-Flint. Dr. Wyneken works with both pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers, helping them make sense of basic mathematics so they can confidently and effectively help children to do the same.
