Monica Bussone

Written by Samantha Jarbou: Biology major, pre-medical concentration; minors in Psychology and Chemistry

Monica Bussone, a health sciences major with a minor in public health and a concentration in Pre-Physician Assistant studies, has built her college experience around a clear and compassionate goal, becoming a Physician Assistant. Her interest in healthcare has been longstanding, but she knew early on that she wanted a role focused on diagnosing and treating patients rather than following a traditional nursing path. Through conversations with peers and involvement in the Pre-Physician Assistant club, she gained insight into the profession and found a strong sense of direction. “Everyone I talked to loved the profession,” she said, reinforcing her decision to pursue it.Monica’s off-campus experience played a significant role in confirming her career choice. While shadowing at a dermatology office in Auburn Hills, she observed the day-to-day responsibilities of a Physician Assistant firsthand. The experience provided not only practical insight but also mentorship, as the PA she worked with offered guidance on the application process and professional expectations.

That experience directly inspired her thesis, which focused on psoriasis and its impact on mental health. Through a comprehensive literature review, Monica examined how the condition affects patients beyond physical symptoms, including social isolation and stigma. Her research highlights the often-overlooked psychological burden of chronic skin conditions, emphasizing the importance of awareness and empathy in patient care.

On campus, Monica has been actively involved in the Pre-Physician Assistant club, which she describes as one of the most valuable parts of her college experience. Through the organization, she has participated in hands-on learning opportunities, including visits to simulation centers where students practice clinical skills such as starting IVs and performing ultrasounds.

Like many honors students, Monica values the connections she has built through the honors program. She credits Dr. Streckovic and Laura, with helping her find meaningful volunteer and academic opportunities that contributed to her growth. She also draws inspiration from her grandmother, whose dedication and work ethic continue to influence her. “She’s 83 and still working part-time,” Monica shared. “She’s super supportive and one of the reasons I got into healthcare.”

Following graduation, Monica plans to work and apply to Physician Assistant programs, taking the next step toward a career centered on patient care and impact.
