Energy Research Resources Available

The Association of Public Land-grant Universities held a workshop on peer review and best practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy research funding on January 26, 2010. Video recordings of the sessions and PowerPoint presentations delivered by representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Office of Science, the National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities,  the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Office of Naval Research Naval Materials Division are available online.

Undergraduates Sought for Nanoscale Device Research

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking applications for the 2010 Nanotechnology Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. Applications are due by February 28, 2010. Selected students will spend 10 weeks, from June 1 to August 1, 2010, engaged in cutting-edge nanoscale device development research projects with faculty mentors and graduate student lab mates.

Funding from the National Science Foundation provides each student with a $3,400 stipend, lodging, travel to campus, and a number of activities and events outside the lab. Women and persons from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Federal Outreach Materials Available

The University of Missouri hosted a national webinar on federal FY 10 research priorities and budgets on November 10, 2009. The PowerPoint presentations delivered by the U.S. Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Office of Naval Research have been posted and are available for download. Agency presenters gave details on FY 10 budget requests, updates on FY 09 expenditures (including American Recovery and Reinvestment Act awards), and award processes and recipient reporting.

Faculty Award

Congratulations to Quamrul Mazumder, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science, Computer Science, Engineering and Physics. As a co-investigator – Mazumder and his colleague received an award from the National Science Foundation for their project “Evaluating Online Metacognition Tools for Use in Large Classrooms.” They were awarded $149,857.

Federal Funding Opportunities

Anyone interested in applying for Academic Research Infrastructure (ARI) or Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) funding under the National Science Foundation’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) competitions is encouraged to review information provided during a May 28, 2009 webcast. Individuals who did not participate live can still register online, then play the webcast or download the presentation materials. The extensive question and answer session led by Stephen Meacham (ARI) and Randy Phelps (MRI) is included in the recording. Federal Grants One Step Closer to Being Standardized

Effective July 1, 2008, ten federal agencies will implement a standard set of research terms and conditions for its grantees and partner organizations. The Defense Department’s Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, Army Research Office, and Office of Naval Research, and the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, National Institutes of Health, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, and Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service have all adopted a Federal Demonstration Partnership-proposed model implementation of OMB Circular A–110 in an effort to create greater consistency in the administration of federal research awards.
