Faculty and Staff Awards

Congratulations to the following UM-Flint faculty and staff:

  • Mike Lane, Environmental Health and Safety Manager, who recently received a  $ 45,750 grant from the State of Michigan – Department of State Police for the following project: “University of Michigan – Flint Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan”.
  • Mary Jo Finney, Dean of the School of Education & Human Services, who recently received a $32,906 grant from Mott Community College for the following project: “Smart Teaches as Role Models – STAR .”

Undergraduate Students Presenting at NCUR

We’re happy to announce that two of our students – Cameron Waites and Nkemdilim Nwodo – have been accepted to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research! Cameron (facutly advisors, Suzanne Selig and Maureen Thum) will be presenting his paper entitled “Oligodendrogenesis After Hypoxic-ischemic Stroke in the Mouse Brain” and Nkemdilim (facutly advisor, Dana Dyson) will be presenting her paper entitled “High School Dropout Rates in Michigan School Districts: The Influence of Poverty, Educational Attainment, and Location for the Years 2004-2007”

This year’s NCUR will take place on the campus of the University of Montana. Congrats, Cameron and Nkemdilim!

Call for Proposals: Research and Creative Activities Awards

The Office of Research and the Research Creative Activity Committee (RCAC) would like to announce the Winter 2010 Call for Proposals.
 
Proposals are due in the Office of Research by Friday, March 12, 2010 at 5:00 pm. 
 
Proposals will be reviewed by the Research and Creative Activities Committee with funding decisions announced in mid-April.  Please note that all proposals must be submitted in hard copy and electronically. Energy Research Resources Available

The Association of Public Land-grant Universities held a workshop on peer review and best practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy research funding on January 26, 2010. Video recordings of the sessions and PowerPoint presentations delivered by representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Office of Science, the National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities,  the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Office of Naval Research Naval Materials Division are available online.

Call for Proposals: Bryer Award

The Office of Development & Alumni Relations and the Office of Research are pleased to announce the Winter 2010 Request for Proposals (RFP) for The Dr. Ben F. Bryer Foundation Medical Research Fund.

The Fund was established by the family of Ben F. Bryer to encourage and support the medical research endeavors of University of Michigan-Flint faculty.  This research fund honors the accomplishments of Ben Bryer, surgeon, scientist, educator, author, and humanist, in his pursuit of medical knowledge.  Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Bryer’s sister and foundation trustee, Bess Hurand, and her husband Arthur for making this fund possible. 
 
Funding is available on an application basis to full-time faculty of the University of Michigan-Flint to provide support for medical and biomedical research, with a priority given to research related to cancer.  At this time, it is anticipated that one award in the amount of $5,000-$7,000 will be available.  As the fund grows, additional RFPs will be announced.
