Giving Blueday: How Your Generosity Impacts UM-Flint

Today is your opportunity to support what you’re passionate about

Today is Giving Blueday 2025, the university’s annual day of giving!

This 24-hour period allows students, alumni, and other campus community members to give money to the causes and campus organizations they are most passionate about.

Shelby Newport, Theatre Faculty

Shelby Newport, a member of the University’s faculty since 2009 and now Chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, fell in love with the campus from the moment she arrived at UM-Flint.

“From the minute I walked through the door for my first interview in the summer of 2009, I knew the students were different. They want to be there in a different kind of way than I experienced in my undergrad and at my graduate work at a much larger institution. So I was excited to engage with the students.”

Newport, a donor herself, notes the importance of this year’s Giving Blueday because it can bring the campus community closer.

“Particularly this year, it might be a real moment of togetherness where we can really believe and contribute to something greater than we are and feel like that makes a difference — because any dollar amount makes a difference.”

The funds raised from Giving Blueday will further our college’s initiatives and missions and go towards scholarships that help students with the financial burden of paying for college. Receiving a scholarship not only eases student finances but can also boost students’ confidence.

Lisa Overwater, Psychology Student

Lisa Overwater, a psychology major, said that being awarded a scholarship empowered her and her educational journey.

“Coming in as an adult and someone who was not a very confident student, it was a really affirming sort of recognition that I was doing the work and that I was going to be able to make a difference in this field,” she shared. “Everyone’s biggest deterrent is the price tag, so getting any support in any way really hits you hard and to be able to undeniably recognize that people are trying to help.”
