{"id":791,"date":"2019-04-16T08:01:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T08:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/?p=791"},"modified":"2019-04-16T11:59:09","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T11:59:09","slug":"beneath-heavens-deicide-by-christian-tomlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/2019\/04\/16\/beneath-heavens-deicide-by-christian-tomlins\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Beneath Heaven&#8217;s Deicide&#8221; by Christian Tomlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This poem was chosen by our judges as the 3rd Place winner in our 6th Annual Poetry Contest.<\/p>\n<p><em>Beneath Heaven\u2019s Deicide<\/em><\/p>\n<p>a silent sky left all abandoned while women without a taint<br \/>\nwere hammering at smoldering theodicies on anvils,<br \/>\nand men who once mistook themselves (a crime, perhaps) as saints<br \/>\nwould find themselves with weeping souls now rendered with clipped wings.<\/p>\n<p>the streets flooded with fatherless children in uprising;<br \/>\nthey who knew ornate temples biding in reverent silence,<br \/>\nnon-empty tombs of albatross\u2019 went unatoned by tithing;<br \/>\nsalvation found to be a gift repentance could never bring.<\/p>\n<p>they scour the earth with ill attempts to salvage selfish meaning,<br \/>\na tale of man pursuing some elusive panacea.<br \/>\nto not accept concomitant were damned and sinn&#8217;r scheming,<br \/>\nconspiring, yet careful not to wake the beast in slumber;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cwell hurry sir, your family may yet escape this blight;<br \/>\nlet us make in our own image fulfilling desperate need,<br \/>\nlest empires lay underneath the darkened skies by night,<br \/>\nto weep and pray; a satisfy for every man&#8217;s great hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>they\u2019ll meet somewhere on hallowed ground while smelting sacred gold,<br \/>\ntread carefully so ancient day their workings may not tarnish,<br \/>\nmen slaving day and night to craft the face of great divine,<br \/>\npretending not to notice their reflection in the varnish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This poem was chosen by our judges as the 3rd Place winner in our 6th Annual Poetry Contest.
