It\u2019s also a place for creative writing. We can work with you on any kind of writing you want to bring in, at any point of the process. We can brainstorm with you; we can help you figure out how you want to revise, and everything else in between.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes rumors and myths about the writing center can scare people away. Maybe bringing up some of these to debunk in the course of this series can help clear some misconceptions about what kind of place the writing center is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: No one knows how tutors get to work at the writing center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-287\" alt=\"img0001\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001-1024x567.jpg\" width=\"520\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001-1024x567.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001-672x372.jpg 672w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img0001-1038x576.jpg 1038w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact: Every tutor that works at the writing center takes a course through the English Department<\/strong>\u2014Seminar in Collaborative Theory and Writing Practice. The course teaches them about different tutoring styles and includes a practicum, where they observe tutors working at the writing center and gradually begin to practice with other students and even in simulations.\u00a0 After taking the class, there is a chance to apply for a position in the writing center. <strong>This means you get to work with a trained individual deemed qualified by the admins at the writing center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: When you work with tutors, they tell you what to do with your writing and how to write the way everyone should write.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-288\" alt=\"img001\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img001-1024x648.jpg\" width=\"529\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img001-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img001-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img001.jpg 1865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact: We don\u2019t believe there\u2019s a specific way to write.<\/strong> When you work with a tutor, you\u2019re working with a student just like you who has developed skills in working with writers with no power structure barrier between you. They aim to help you develop skills as a writer to help you develop more confidence and independence when you approach your own writing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: We \u2018critique\u2019 your work. We tell you what\u2019s bad and how to fix it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-289\" alt=\"img008\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img008-1024x698.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact 1:<\/strong> <strong>We don\u2019t believe in bad writing.<\/strong> We look at writing as being in a process\u2014it might start out not looking at all like what you want it to be, but as you look at it again and again and decide if and how you want to change parts of it.<\/p>\n<p>You should see some of our first drafts. If we papered a haunted house with them, Stephen King\u2019s rejection letters would pale by comparison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact2 :<\/strong> <strong>We don\u2019t want to tell you what to do.<\/strong> We can make suggestions and feedback that you might consider, but that you don\u2019t have to take if you don\u2019t think it fits. Different tutors may have different styles to go about this, but this is still a general focus.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we try to help you find the direction you want to take with it by asking you questions about different parts of your writing in discussing it. This might open your eyes to different aspects of your piece you weren\u2019t thinking about before and help you figure out what you want to do with it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: You have to bring in writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-290\" alt=\"img009\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img009-1024x408.jpg\" width=\"638\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img009-1024x408.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img009-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/writingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/11\/img009.jpg 2028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact: You don\u2019t.<\/strong> We look at writing as a process and part of the process is generating ideas and content to write about. Writing can be equated to a conversation\u2014the way you might structure how you say might be confusing to the person you\u2019re speaking to if you don\u2019t clarify it. But it\u2019s what you\u2019re saying and how you organize the main ideas you\u2019re talking about that matters too. So we try to look at those things with you as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: Only bad writers go there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> <strong>THERE ARE NO BAD WRITERS.<\/strong> There are, however, writers who feel like they don\u2019t like where they\u2019re at.<\/p>\n<p>All kinds of writers can work here and want to. We even have professors come in for feedback on what they\u2019re working on.
