Todd Womack

Womack is proud to be a native from the north end of Flint and a graduate of Northwestern High School. He has a bachelor degree from St. Cloud University and a master’s degree in social work from Clark Atlanta University. His passion for the field is evident in his solid commitment to student success within the department as well as off campus through his continued dedication and work toward strengthening Flint neighborhoods and supporting realistic and solution-focused programs.

Describe your role as academic advisor and instructor in the Social Work Department: I strive to support students by walking alongside them in a developmental manner, assisting them to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. I do this collectively with students, staff, and faculty on campus with like hearts and like minds.

What are your research interests? Civic Engagement within the framework of Asset Building (ABCD) and Human Centered Design (HCD).

Why is social work important to you? One, because it embraces the model of person in environment. Two, because it allows me to be what I am called to be and that is a “subject” in the story of Social Justice that moves beyond the mantra of charity and volunteerism.

What do you want UM-Flint social work students to know about how they can succeed in the field? There is no dichotomy between your personal life and professional life. Social work is a calling and to be successful in this profession, you have to fully embrace that calling and know that on this journey you will be moved to become more mature as an individual person and as a professional. Success is when you see a world that is relational, inclusive, and united.
