UM-Flint Fun Facts

A list of fun facts about the university…(I feel a trivia night is due in the near future)

1. The French Hall used to be called the CROB (the ClassRoom Office Building).

2. The School of Management (SOM) was originally entitled the School of Business, otherwise known as the SOB.

3. Once upon a time, the UCEN was the Rec Center and the Happenings Room was the Gym. (Imagine how many times you’d have to run around that track for one mile!)

4. There used to be a Halo Burger in the UCEN cafeteria.

5. Where the First Street Residence hall is used to be the MSB parking lot.

6. Until recently, the M Flint logo (you know the big yellow M) had the left side skinnier than the right to distinguish it from Ann Arbor whose M was even and Dearborn whose M had the right side skinnier than the left.

7. Where the William S White  Building (WSW) now stands used to be the home of AutoWorld.

8. UM-Flint almost wasn’t named UM-Flint, but C S Mott wanted the name to reflect the city and tied the name to his funding.

9. David M. French (the guy who French Hall is named after) was the first dean of the university.

10. The Riverfront building used to be a Hyatt that was built for AutoWorld.

11. The MSB originally had a title similar to the CROB, it was the Science Laboratory Office Building, or SLOB.

12. The University Pavilion used to be the Water Street Pavilion, a part of AutoWorld that featured shopping and dining.

13. There is a statue of a winged woman atop the University Pavilion and a statue of Gandhi near the First Street Residence Hall.
