Get in the Game with Career Connection

Career Connection is an invaluable, free resource available to all current UM-Flint students and all alumni. It can be used to keep up-to-date on career fairs, workshops, information sessions and dates of when employers will be visiting the campus. It is also great for resume building and interview practice. One of the most helpful resources though, is the job search function which can help to find on-campus work and jobs relating to your specific qualifications.

Here are some of the many benefits Career Connection has to offer:

The Home Page

The home page on Career Connection features a list of events, workshops and career fairs that are coming in the near future. Through this page you can also RSVP to any events that you may want to attend and you can find all of the necessary information about them, such as time and place. Checking the home page often can benefit you in the long run, especially if you take advantage of the opportunities presented there.

InterviewStream

InterviewStream is a relatively new feature that allows you to conduct mock interviews online and go back and review them to critique and better your interview skills. It also has video tutorials and eight expert conducted webinars with tips on how to conduct yourself in an interview and how to land that job. There is also a section with expert tips and in the resources tab, several examples of what not to do in an interview and guides on how to take “ummm” and “like” out of your interview experience.

Resume Builder

Under the shortcuts panel on the right-hand side of the home page is a button entitled “Create/Upload Resume” where you can build a resume from scratch or just upload one you already have to use for job applications. If you are unsure in any way about how exactly to design your resume, you’re in luck because the resume builder features a variety of field specific outlines and also a general template for basic resumes. What’s more is that you can have any of your resumes professionally critiqued! Under this function you can also create or upload cover letters and the best part – you have the option to save your resume to Career Connection which is extremely useful when applying to jobs through the job search.

Job Search

Also located on the shortcuts panel are buttons for both “Search Jobs (all jobs)” and “Jobs I Qualify For”. The search jobs button takes you to another menu where you can explore a plethora of available positions both on campus and in the main-stream market. From this you can easily see whether you qualify for a position or not, since Career Connection checks ahead of time based on your profile information. Beneath each available job is a button to apply (this is where your uploaded resume comes in handy) and that redirects you to the specific applications. Under Jobs I Qualify for, is a similar list of postings that are all specific to you and your skills.

All in all Career Connection is a wonderful resource that is there to help you! With so many helpful resources and obvious benefits, choosing to use Career Connection should be a no-brainer. Just think of all you could accomplish and discover. 🙂
