Information Technology Services

Campus Community,

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browsers.  Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, using Internet Explorer versions 7, 8, & 9 are effected. Microsoft is working on a permanent fix for this exploit however Microsoft has created a patch as an interim measure. ITS is working to deploy the patch to university owned computers.

Until Microsoft releases a permanent fix for this vulnerability ITS recommends not using the Internet Explorer browser.  Please use Firefox or Google Chrome. If you do not have these browsers installed you can download them here:

Update:

UM-Flint Employees,

Yesterday when this message was sent some verbiage was left out that should have been sent.  You may still use Internet Explorer for trusted UM-Flint sites such as Webfocus and Banner.  For all external sites you should use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

Your university owned computer already has Firefox installed on it already.  You will be able to find this in the start menu if it is not already on your desktop.  If Firefox is not installed on your computer you can also install Firefox and Chrome from the L: Drive in the ITS Recommended Applications folder.

ITS will let the campus know when the patch is pushed out and it is safe to use Internet Explorer again for external sites.

We apologize for the confusion that was created by the first message to campus.  If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the ITS Helpdesk at itshelpdesk@umflint.edu.

Thank you,
