For many students, it represents the next step toward professional advancement, deeper expertise, career change, or personal fulfillment. But graduate school is also a major investment — of your time, energy, and financial resources.

As a Director of Graduate Programs, one of my most important pieces of advice to prospective students is this: ask detailed financial questions before you enroll. The more you understand about cost, funding, borrowing, and career outcomes, the better prepared you will be to make a confident and informed decision.

Graduate education can be transformative, but it should also be approached with a clear understanding of both the opportunities and the obligations involved. Before committing to a program, take time to gather information from admissions representatives, financial aid officers, program staff, current students, and alumni. The right questions can help you understand not only what graduate school will cost, but also how that investment may support your long-term goals.

Understand the Full Cost of Attendance

When students think about the cost of graduate school, tuition is often the first number that comes to mind. However, tuition is only one part of the total cost.

Prospective students should look carefully at the full cost of attendance, which may include:

Tuition

University and program fees

Housing

Transportation

Books and course materials

Health insurance

Technology or lab fees

Professional licensing or certification costs

Living expenses

Time away from full-time employment, if applicable

It is also important to ask whether tuition rates are fixed or whether they may increase from year to year. A program that appears affordable in the first year may become more expensive if tuition or fees rise annually.

Students should also ask how long it typically takes to complete the program. A two-year program that frequently takes students three years to finish may cost significantly more than expected. Understanding the realistic timeline to graduation can help you budget more accurately.

Before enrolling, ask:

What is the total cost of attendance for the full program?

Are tuition rates fixed, or can they increase each year?

Are there program-specific fees, lab fees, internship costs, or licensing expenses?

How many years do students in this program typically take to graduate?

These questions help you move beyond the advertised tuition rate and toward a more realistic picture of your total investment.

Ask Direct Questions About Funding

Funding opportunities can vary widely across graduate programs. Some students receive assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, or tuition support, while others rely primarily on loans, personal savings, or employer assistance.

One of the most important questions to ask is whether funding is guaranteed or competitive. A funding package offered in the first year may not automatically continue throughout the program. Students should understand how long financial support lasts, what it covers, and what conditions must be met to maintain it.

For example, some assistantships may cover tuition but not fees. Others may include a stipend but require teaching, research, or administrative work. Some fellowships may be available only for one year, leaving students responsible for future costs.

Ask the program:

Is funding guaranteed each year or awarded competitively?

Are teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships available?

What does the funding cover — tuition, fees, benefits, and/or living expenses?

Does funding cover summer terms?

What happens if funding runs out before I complete the degree?

These conversations are essential. They can help you avoid surprises and plan for the full duration of your graduate education.

Be Thoughtful About Borrowing

For many students, loans are part of the graduate school financing plan. Borrowing is not inherently negative, but it should be done carefully and with a clear understanding of repayment obligations.

Prospective students should ask how much they may need to borrow each academic year and what their projected total borrowing may be at graduation. It is also important to understand federal loan limits for graduate and professional students, as well as whether private loans may be necessary.

Borrowing questions should include:

How much will I need to borrow each year?

What might my total loan balance be when I graduate?

Does this program’s total cost exceed current federal borrowing limits?

What repayment plans will be available after graduation?

What might my projected monthly loan payment be?

If federal loans are not sufficient, what other funding options are available?

Students should also compare federal and private loan options carefully. Federal loans often include borrower protections such as income-driven repayment, deferment, forbearance, and potential forgiveness options. Private loans may have different interest rates, repayment terms, and eligibility requirements, and they may require a co-signer.

Before taking out any loan, ask:

What are the interest rates, fees, and repayment terms?

Will interest accrue while I am enrolled?

When does repayment begin?

Are there penalties or fees for early repayment or refinancing?

What borrower protections are available if I experience financial hardship?

The goal is not simply to determine whether you can borrow enough to attend. The goal is to understand whether the debt you take on is manageable in relation to your future earnings and financial goals.

Look Closely at Student Success and Completion Rates

Cost and funding are only part of the equation. Prospective students should also examine how well a program supports students through to completion.

A program’s completion rate, average time to degree, and student support services can tell you a great deal about the student experience. If many students take longer than expected to finish, that can increase costs. If students frequently leave before completing the program, that is important information to understand.

Ask questions such as:

What percentage of students in this program graduate?

How long do students typically take to complete the degree?

What percentage finish within the expected timeframe?

What factors commonly delay graduation?

What advising, mentoring, academic support, or career support services are available?

Graduate school can be challenging, even for highly capable students. Strong advising, mentoring, and academic support can make a meaningful difference in both student success and overall experience.

Evaluate Career Outcomes

A graduate degree should align with your professional goals. Before enrolling, take time to understand what graduates of the program actually do after completing the degree.

Ask where alumni work, what roles they hold, and whether graduates are employed in their field within six months or one year after graduation. These outcomes can help you assess whether the program has a strong record of preparing students for the careers they want.

Important career outcome questions include:

What career paths do graduates from this program typically pursue?

What percentage of graduates find jobs in their field within six months or one year?

Where do graduates typically work — industry, government, nonprofit, academia, healthcare, education, or another sector?

What internships, networking opportunities, experiential learning, or professional development experiences are available?

How does the program help students prepare for the job market?

A strong graduate program should be able to speak clearly about the pathways its graduates pursue and the support it provides to help students reach those outcomes.

Consider Return on Investment

Return on investment, or ROI, is not just about salary. It includes professional growth, career mobility, personal fulfillment, expanded networks, and long-term opportunity. Still, it is wise to compare expected earnings with the amount you may need to borrow.

Prospective students should ask about typical starting salaries and longer-term earnings for graduates. It is also helpful to compare those earnings with average debt levels for students who complete the program.

Ask:

What are the typical starting salaries for graduates?

What do alumni typically earn one, five, or ten years after graduation?

How do expected salaries compare to the amount students typically borrow?

What level of debt do graduates usually have when they finish?

Based on typical earnings and borrowing, how long might it take to repay student loans?

These questions can help you determine whether the program fits your financial situation and long-term goals.

A Final Word for Prospective Students

Graduate school can open doors. It can deepen your expertise, expand your professional network, and prepare you for meaningful career opportunities. But the decision to enroll should be made with both enthusiasm and clarity.

Before choosing a program, take time to understand:

The full cost of attendance

Available funding and how long it lasts

Loan options and repayment obligations

Completion rates and student support

Career outcomes and earning potential

How the degree aligns with your goals

The best graduate school decision is an informed one. Ask questions early. Ask for data when possible. Talk with program staff, financial aid professionals, current students, and alumni. Compare programs carefully. And most importantly, consider how each program supports not only your academic interests, but also your financial well-being and future career.

Graduate education is a significant investment.
