{"id":6062,"date":"2026-10-05T08:41:05","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T12:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/?p=6062"},"modified":"2026-10-05T12:52:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T16:52:20","slug":"prescribing-psychologist-cheryl-hall-brings-30-years-of-private-practice-experience-to-um-flint-psychology-internship-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/2026\/10\/05\/prescribing-psychologist-cheryl-hall-brings-30-years-of-private-practice-experience-to-um-flint-psychology-internship-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Prescribing Psychologist Cheryl Hall Brings 30 Years of Private Practice Experience to UM-Flint Psychology Internship Class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in Professor Susan Gano Phillips&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/case\/academic-departments\/psychology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psychology Internship class<\/a> at UM-Flint heard from a working prescribing psychologist on Monday, September 21, and several say the session changed how they see their futures in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Cheryl Hall, who has spent 30 years in private practice in Texas and New Mexico, spoke to the Fall 2026 internship group both in person and online. She described her career, the education and training required to become a prescribing psychologist, and the realities of running a practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/10\/2026-OCT-Hall-visit-with-Susan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"752\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/10\/2026-OCT-Hall-visit-with-Susan.jpg\" alt=\"Two people stand together outdoors, smiling, with trees in the background. Hall discussed the movement to grant psychologists prescription privileges, which students learned is not currently strong in Michigan. She noted that most prescribing-training programs are designed for people who already hold a PhD, that only two programs offer initial training, and that the training is expensive. She also covered insurance, taxes, and how to handle difficult conversations such as unpaid fees, and she explained the differences between PhD-level psychologists and master&#8217;s-level clinicians. Her advice to students interested in private practice was to start a dissertation before internship and develop a specialty such as neuropsychology or forensics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students responded enthusiastically. Kion Olsen said, &#8220;This was a fantastic meeting. I learned so much, and I took 4 pages of notes.&#8221; Jackson Knapp went further: &#8220;Truthfully, this has been the best talk I have ever participated in on campus; I&#8217;ve never been more well-informed than I have been listening to, and speaking with, Dr. Hall.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, the biggest effect was a wider view of the profession. Emily Murphy said, &#8220;Her experience helped me see therapy in a much bigger picture than before the meeting.&#8221; She added that Hall &#8220;also helped me view prescription privilege from a more nuanced, contextual perspective.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I particularly enjoyed this meeting because prescription privileges were something I was genuinely curious about but had never thought to research or discuss with a professional,&#8221; Kion said. One detail stood out: Dr. Hall said her malpractice insurance rose by only 10% after she gained prescribing authority. &#8220;This was a very interesting insight I never even thought to consider.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The business side of practice also got attention. &#8220;I learned the importance of gaining business knowledge for private practice,&#8221; Emily said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson said the talk expanded his plans for life after graduation. &#8220;I originally was very rigid and tunnel-visioned regarding what I must do after my bachelor&#8217;s,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But thanks to Dr. Hall&#8217;s tremendous insights in the field, I feel much more adaptable in this changing career landscape.&#8221; He added, &#8220;I [now] have greater faith that I can succeed in my psychology career goals through how many opportunities I can pursue if I so seek them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emily shared that the session also helped with the doubts that come with being new to the field. &#8220;As an undergraduate, I consume information from various sources that can sometimes mislead me as I pursue a psychology degree,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Because I am new to the field, doubts can keep me from feeling positive and confident about the career I pursue and the field I want to enter.&#8221; After the session, she said, &#8220;I gained a better understanding of the field I will be in the future. Of course, it frees up much of my mental load while I pursue a psychology degree.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked why events like this matter for undergraduates, the students pointed to exposure and encouragement. &#8220;These opportunities provide students like myself with empowering messages of life after academia,&#8221; Jackson said. &#8220;Speaker events such as Dr. Hall&#8217;s remind me of the incredible potential and versatility psychology has to offer at any degree level.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kion made a similar case for the wider student body. &#8220;I think opportunities like this are especially important because psychology is constantly changing, and there are so many career paths that students may not know about,&#8221;
