This year, four CASE faculty were honored with awards for their contribution to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Karen Caldwell, Education | Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty Initiative Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Caldwell-Headshot-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"486\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Caldwell-Headshot-1.jpg\" alt=\"A person with a confident smile stands with arms crossed in front of a bookshelf filled with books.\" class=\"wp-image-6044\" style=\"width:auto;height:295px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Caldwell-Headshot-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/09\/Caldwell-Headshot-1-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In honor of the first tenured minority faculty member on UM-Flint&#8217;s Campus, this award recognizes faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, or research and courses that focus on issues affecting underrepresented populations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I am honored to receive an award bearing the name of Dr. Alvin D. Loving, one of the founding professors of the University of Michigan-Flint and the first Black full professor in the University of Michigan system,&#8221; Karen shared. &#8220;His legacy represents a significant milestone in this university&#8217;s history, and I am mindful of that history in receiving this award. My teaching and research are grounded in critical literacy within social studies education, with a focus on preparing future teachers to engage in historical thinking, consider multiple perspectives, and examine dominant narratives that have often marginalized or excluded certain voices and experiences. This commitment informs my work with preservice teachers and my broader engagement with the Flint community. This award recognizes the work that I put into helping provide a better experience on campus for students and faculty through my various commitments and programs. This recognition matters to me because service work is often overlooked, so being recognized for it is truly fulfilling and reminds me of the good it can do,&#8221; Kim said. &#8220;To me, service means making the world around us a better place. My work with students outside the classroom is some of the most challenging, but also the most rewarding, work I do. Knowing that people see this and recognize it matters not just for me, but for others who do service work as well. Sharing this honor with my parents at the ceremony also brought my family tremendous pride. As a UM-Flint alum, I believe in our students\u2019 ability to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
