{"id":4774,"date":"2025-10-21T12:39:40","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T16:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/?p=4774"},"modified":"2026-01-30T08:15:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T13:15:42","slug":"psy100-students-at-um-flint-show-us-how-to-build-a-neuron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/2025\/10\/21\/psy100-students-at-um-flint-show-us-how-to-build-a-neuron\/","title":{"rendered":"PSY100 Students at UM-Flint Show us How to Build a Neuron"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Early in the Fall 2025 semester, students in PSY100 had the opportunity to participate in a fun and educational project called &#8220;Build a Neuron,&#8221; designed as an engaging introduction to the foundations of psychology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Understanding how neurons communicate is essential to understanding how we think, feel, and behave \u2014 the very essence of what it means to be human,&#8221; said Amy Rouleau, a lecturer in the Psychology Department at UM-Flint. &#8220;By beginning the course with this project, students ground themselves in the basics of neurological communication, which serves as the building block for everything else they will learn about their thoughts, feelings, and behavior.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students were challenged to use only materials they could find at home \u2014 anything from string and pipe cleaners to pasta and Play-Doh \u2014 to construct their own models of neurons. Presenting their creations in small groups, they explained each neuron\u2019s structure and function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The &#8216;Build a Neuron&#8217; project is more than just an exercise in neuroscience; it is a way to showcase imagination, foster connections with peers they hadn\u2019t met before, and learn by teaching each other,&#8221; Rouleau explained. &#8220;By the end of the activity, students walked away not only with a clearer understanding of neurobiology but also with a stronger sense of community and enthusiasm for the course ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the most rewarding moments for me, as an instructor, is witnessing the genuine excitement and playful energy that fills the campus as students gather in groups,&#8221; she shared. &#8220;This project goes far beyond a test of intellect and creativity; it\u2019s also a powerful way to foster community and support student success. By encouraging students to combine their imagination, reasoning, and teamwork, it creates learning experiences that remain with them long after the activity ends.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
