{"id":4210,"date":"2025-05-05T10:33:06","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T14:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/?p=4210"},"modified":"2025-06-04T15:54:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T19:54:11","slug":"um-flint-english-students-bring-shakespeare-into-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.umflint.edu\/case\/2025\/05\/05\/um-flint-english-students-bring-shakespeare-into-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"UM-Flint English students bring Shakespeare into 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cI have no performance experience, but working with these scripts draws me in and makes me want to act,\u201d said one student midway through this past semester\u2019s ENG315: Shakespeare course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a reason that Shakespeare\u2019s work has stood the test of time and is regularly adapted and produced around the world: His words continue to reflect much of the human experience. UM-Flint students spent the semester exploring and discussing five of Shakespeare\u2019s works \u2014 \u201cTitus Andronicus,\u201d \u201cHenry IV Part One,\u201d \u201cTwelfth Night,\u201d \u201cHamlet,\u201d and \u201cThe Winter\u2019s Tale\u201d \u2014 and were then tasked with writing one or two scenes that carried forward something they found hopeful or inspiring in the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in groups over the last two weeks of the semester, the students wrote original scripts that connected with modern sensibilities. These five beautiful creations were written in emotional, thoughtful, metaphoric language by 20 students from various majors,\u201d said Mary Jo Kietzman, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/case\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>. \u201cAs I listened, on the edge of my seat, I heard language we need now: a language of imagination, thinking, and dreams, not a bureaucratic language filled with data points and jargon.
