UM-Flint and FAIR Constitution Day event inspires community interest in protecting immigrant rights

In commemoration of Constitution Day, the University of Michigan-Flint partnered with the Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights to host a panel discussion focusing on immigrant rights. With over 30 students, faculty, staff, and Flint community members in attendance, panelists shared their perspectives and experiences regarding the current environment for immigrants in the U.S., and also took questions from the audience.

“Not only was turnout fantastic, but the level of participation was high,” said Kim Saks, associate professor of political science at UM-Flint and one of the event’s organizers. “People are clearly invested in this issue and in how we, as a society, deal with immigration and immigrant rights. It was heartening to see so many students there, many of whom asked questions and stayed after to talk.”

Lucine Jarrah, executive director of the Arab American Heritage Council, which is one of FAIR’s member organizations, was equally impressed by the level of engagement at the event. “The Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights (FAIR) was honored and excited to be invited as guest speakers for Constitution Day,” she said. “Attendees were engaged and asked thoughtful questions about immigrant rights and the challenges our communities face here in Flint. I know we all left feeling hopeful that these conversations will lead to more collective movement building and stronger advocacy moving forward.”
