It’s a Wrap! UM-Flint Music’s First Annual High School Instrumental & Vocal Workshop
This Fall, UM-Flint’s Music program invited high school students from around the area to visit our campus, participate in instrument-specific workshops, enjoy performances from current music program students, and experience life on campus.
Over 100 students from 7 school districts poured off the school buses on the morning of October 16th, ready to learn, make new friends, and explore UM-Flint.
“It was inspiring to see UM-Flint Music faculty, students, and area high school students with their teachers come together on campus for a whirlwind of instrument and voice-specific activities,” said Brian Di Blassio, associate professor of music and music program coordinator.
Designed by assistant professor of music Doug Burtch, the day began with an introduction to the University of Michigan-Flint, the Fine and Performing Arts Department, and the music program and music faculty. Afterward, the students went into breakout sessions focused on their instrument or vocal technique. Participants learned new techniques, explored the repertoire specific to their instruments, discussed collegiate-level brands of instruments and accessories, and practiced together.
“For the high school students attending, this workshop was a day of learning not only about music and the specifics of their instruments or voice from our music faculty but also about our music programs, ensembles, students, and university,” said Gabriela Hristova, associate professor of music and director of the choral program. “As always, it is a joy to expand our community of eager-to-learn students and to offer them a look into the music possibilities at UM-Flint.”
An on-campus lunch break allowed the students to explore life at UM-Flint more. Many ate at the UCEN or in the Pavilion, accompanied by their high school teachers.
Afterward, the group met in the UM-Flint theatre to watch a performance featuring faculty solos, ensembles, some of the university’s student performing groups—the Chorale, Chamber Singers, and Wind Symphony—and the Faculty Jazz Quintet.
“It was wonderful to have all of our music faculty on campus to work with these students and give them a sample of what college music courses are like,” said Doug Burtch, assistant professor of music. “Regardless of their major, students who attend UM-Flint can continue to include music in their studies. We received excellent feedback for this first event and look forward to hosting it for many years to come.”
