Spotlight on Engagement: Incoming Freshmen
Incoming freshmen donated almost 700 hours of volunteer work this summer during their orientation on campus! Several local agencies partnered with UM-Flint to provide a chance for the students to learn about community engagement opportunities in our area. Thanks to the amazing efforts of 690 incoming freshmen and international students, the following items were made or assembled and will be donated to local nonprofit organizations:
- 109 fleece blankets and scarves
- 480 personal needs bags
- 394 greeting and get well cards
- 185 cement pavers (for Neff Center outdoor classroom)
- 450 lunch bags decorated for sandwich meals
- 7 tool benches
- 5 mailbox posts
- 270 birthday cards
In addition to this, 200 students were trained in compression-only CPR. Community partners in this effort are American Red Cross-Genesee/Lapeer Chapter, Carriage Town Ministries, Boys and Girl’s Club of Greater Flint, Habitat for Humanity, My Brother’s Keeper, and the UM-Flint Neff Center at Beecher HS/MS. These and other agencies will reap the benefits of the students’ labor of love. Great job students!
