This poem was the 3rd Place Winner in our 4th Annual Poetry Contest.

At the age of seventeen,

I started my life,

Intending to be a professional,

Instead, I became a wife.

I cooked, I cleaned,

I ironed, I sewed,

I raised three children,

I carried quite a load.

While others graduated

And accomplished their goals,

My life was redirected

To guiding three little souls.

Now I am to the age,

Of fifty plus one,

Proud to have my family

Including a new grandson.

I am now a senior,

With my graduation in sight,

And I finally feel,

I have done something right.

Not only will I achieve

My long – awaited degree,

But my beautiful children,

Will be proud of me.
