Balancing Act Program Series for Faculty

This session will focus on providing a venue in which to discuss topics that are traditionally encountered by women in academe.  Discussion will include an exploration of ways to find balance between academic work and other responsibilities, particularly as one works towards tenure.  Light dinner will be served.  Co-sponsored by the Thompson Center for Teaching and Learning.

This film addresses the epidemic use of rape as a weapon of war in the Congo, and follows Lumo, a young Congolese rape survivor on her journey to recovery in HEAL Africa hospital in Eastern Congo. Goma Film Project producers will give a brief introduction to the film and lead a Q&A immediately following.

Women’s Global Issues Series

Lend your support to the people of war torn Congo.  Join in our efforts to raise awareness about the war related sexual violence that women are enduring and their fight to reclaim their lives by participating in our “Break the Silence” events. “Break the Silence” is a movement being held on college campuses across the country. For more information check out www.congoweek.org.  Our activities include:

  • A letter writing campaign; Addressing letters to the president of the Congo, and to U.S Senators and Representatives.
  • Collecting cell phones for recycling to help minimize the use of coltan, a valuable ore which is found in abundance in the Congo. Rebel groups are funded by the sale of this valuable ore which is used by companies like Apple and Sony to create cell phones, laptops, and handheld video games.
  • An informative PowerPoint will be shown to help bring awareness to and understanding about one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time.

Self Defense Workshop Series - Register Now!

Fee: Early registration $10, after October 6th, $15. This fee covers all three classes. If two or more sign-up together, each person receives $2.50 off their fee. Learn self-protection scenarios, distance control, awareness and avoidance skills as well as stance and basic strike skills.
