The Early Childhood Development Center really outdid themselves with this one. Last week they hosted a Light Up the Night community event at the Flint Farmer’s Market. Over 300 people attended the event and explored all things light. Activities included glow bowling, light and shadow play, lava lamp making, and so much more. The UM-Flint Early Childhood Education Club volunteered at the stations and the Chemistry Club provided their own educational activities as well. The event provided children and their families to explore light in an hands-on engaging way. Plus everything looked really cool in the blacked out room.

As soon as you walked into the room you could feel the excitement and learning happening. Families coming together to have a fun night out with their children, while learning through play. The room was bustling with laughter and music.

UM-Flint is currently promoting this idea of MLK365. It focuses on the idea that community service shouldn’t happen on just one day a year, but all year round. The Soup Per Bowl event and Light Up the Night are two great examples of events that give back to the community in a fun and engaging way. Doing good and giving back is a year round effort and SEHS is doing just that.
