UM-Flint Staff Council News

Please join us for the 14^th Annual Staff Assembly Meeting Breakfast on Thursday, May 22 from 9am-11am in the Michigan Rooms.  

We will have have a short program, beginning at approximately 9:30am, to recognize the nominees and winners of the 2008 Staff Recognition Award.  Navy blue leatherette UM-Flint portfolios will also be on sale for $10 as a fundraiser for future Staff Council events and activities.  We look forward to seeing you!

Staff Council is pleased to announce that nine (9) staff members were nominated during the month of April.  Each recipient received their printable certificate of achievement (via email attachment).

Please join us in congratulating Sue Fielder, Nick Gaspar, Jamila Harris, Brenda Jencks, Lois Martin, Debbie Seyerle, Jo Ann Shabazz, Ina Tonks, and Eric (Don) Walker.  Also, Jamile Harris was select Recipient of the Month and will receive a Sterling Staff Awards mug and special recognition on the Spotlight on Staff page.

All of the nominees are wonderful and it was difficult to make a final decision.  I want to thank Sandra Alberto and Tom Wrobel for serving on the Staff Recognition Awards Selection Committee with me. 

I am pleased to announce that the winners of the 2008 Staff Recognition Awards are Mary Deibis from the Office of Graduate Programs and Nicholas Gaspar from the Office of Extended Learning!   

The winners and nominees will be honored at the Staff Recognition Award Breakfast NEXT THURSDAY, May 22, 2008 at 9:00am in the Michigan Rooms.  We hope you will be able to join us.  An invitation flyer will be emailed to all staff members. 

A special thanks to all of the staff and faculty that nominated a staff member and/or wrote a letter of support.  It was a delight to read the thoughtful comments on the excellence of staff members at the University of Michigan-Flint.

Happy Birthday!

The Staff Council Elections have concluded.  It is my pleasure to announce the Staff Council Representatives for 2008-2009. 

The new members will serve a two year term.  They are:  Beulah Alexander, Rhonda Broadworth, Karen Davis, Dee Dee Hurley, and Sharon Seames 

The returning members will serve the final year of their two year term.  They are:  Barbara Bassett, Vicky Dawson, Dan Getty, Annette Holt, and Debi Rowden

Staff members are highly encouraged to consider this volunteer opportunity:

The University of Michigan-Flint will hold the first MFUSE Concert featuring the hip hop artist Common.  MFUSE is a celebration for students to mark the end of the academic year.  The concert will take place on Wednesday, April 16 in Lot A, next to the Recreation Center.  Festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with Common taking the stage around 6:00 p.m.  The community is invited to attend. We are looking for 100 volunteers to help!  This is a great way to earn service points, and to welcome the community to our campus.  Duties for volunteers will include:

·         Set up
·         Clean up
·         Crowd monitoring
·         Information center
·         VIP Section
·         Vendor Section
·         Front Stage Area

Even if you can volunteer for just a couple of hours, it will help.  If you’re interested, please sign up online at http://www.umflint.edu/mfuse/volunteer_signup.htm.   All volunteers will receive free food at the concert and a free long-sleeve t-shirt identifying them as a volunteer and commemorating the event.

In 1993, Staff Council was established to stimulate and maintain a spirit of unity and open communication between the Staff and the Administration of the University of Michigan-Flint.

Staff Council is looking for candidates to run for the 2008-2009 Staff Council.  We have five positions open for non-Union employees.

If you are interested or know of anyone who might be interested in running for Staff Council, please submit the names of nominees to me at cpepperd@umflint.edu by 5pm on Friday, April 18, 2008. 

Not quite sure what Staff Council does?  Visit our website at www.umflint.edu/staffcouncil and check out our updated brochure in PDF.  Staff Council is also sending a printed copy of our updated brochure to every staff member to learn more about the Council.  We hope this will encourage staff members to consider running for the Council!
