The University of Michigan – Flint is proud to welcome representatives of Microsoft to campus on November 4, 2009. The presentation will talk about emerging technology trends and how Microsoft fits into that equation. Festivities will begin at 10 am at the Kiva on the first floor of UCEN. Everyone is invited.

2010 Chauvenet Prize October 24, 2009

The Chauvenet Prize is awarded yearly by the MAA in recognition of an exceptional expository article on a mathematical topic. It has been decided that the 2010 award will go to Kettering University professor, and regular guest for seminars at UM-Flint, Dr. Brian J. McCartin for his article “e: The Master of All” which was published in the Spring 2006 issue of Mathematical Intelligencer. The UM-Flint Math Department congratulates Dr. McCartin on his achievement.

On October 17, 2009, the above individuals from University of Michigan – Flint (Pictured with Keynote Speaker Dr. Joe Gillian) attended the 12th Annual Michigan Undergraduate Mathematics Conference presented, this year, by Wayne State University. Although there were no presentations by UM-Flint students, due to unforeseen circumstances, there were many interesting and informative topics. Special attention was awarded to Paul Downen of Lawrence Tech. and Samantha Dahlberg of GVSU for exceptional presentations.

Next year’s conference will be presented by Grand Valley State University. Any undergraduate is welcome to give a talk on any math related research. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Ricardo Alfaro.

Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition May 1, 2009

The results from the Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition are in!

Teresa Olson, Steve Bennett, and Joshua Harvey’s team came in 4th place, while Da Zheng, Zhiguo Wang and Matthew Stodola’s team came in 5th.  Both teams answered as many questions correctly as the top finisher, but received fewer points in subjective partial credit.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and good luck again next year.
