2009 Summer Math Institute

The 2009 Summer Math Institute (SMI) at Cornell will run from June 6 to August 1.  The SMI Program’s primary purpose is to better prepare undergraduates, particularly women and underrepresented minorities,
for the rigors of beginning courses in Ph.D. programs in the mathematical sciences.  The main component of SMI in 2009 is an algebra course at a level comparable to Cornell’s honors undergraduate algebra course.  There is also a project component to SMI.  Detailed information is available at

http://www.math.cornell.edu/~smi/

It is expected that applicants have taken a standard sophomore-level linear algebra course.  A further course in algebra, linear algebra, number theory, or a related topic would also be helpful but is not crucial.  Students who will graduate during the 2008-2009 academic year are eligible to apply.  Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

On March 27 and 28th, 2009 (a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning), Rose-Hulman will host the 26th iteration of its annual Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. The goal of this conference is to spotlight and celebrate the accomplishments and work of undergraduate mathematicians. As such, the bulk of the talks are given by undergraduates. This is a great chance for students to present results obtained in independent studies or senior theses done over the course of this academic year, as well as mathematics done in an REU or other summer research project. Student talks are 20 minutes in length, and students who speak do not pay the $10 registration fee. Moreover, we provide free housing for all students who attend the conference! We may also be able to provide some travel assistance for students, and all speakers get at least one free book in our “big book give-away.”

This year we have three invited talks from two professional mathematicians, T. Christine Stevens from Saint Louis University and Kelly Black from Union College.

The conference web page is at:

http://www.rose-hulman.edu/mathconf/

Students who wish to speak can submit an abstract anytime up to March 23, 2009.
