Have you ever received an email one of the following subject lines?

  • You’ve received a greeting card from a admirer!
  • You’ve received a greeting card from a class-mate!
  • You’ve received a postcard from a colleague!
  • You’ve received a postcard from a family member!
  • You’ve received an ecard from a friend!
  • You’ve received an ecard from a mate!
  • Someone sent you an ecard!
  • According to Bruce Burrell, leader of the U-M Virus Busters, everyone should think twice before clicking any link in these messages.  Even though there are many hoax emails circulating that warn about an increase in these types of ecard virus threats, Bruce advises that this is a real problem.  The email messages themselves do not contain the virus, so they pass through the anti-virus filters on campus.  The problem can happen when you click on any link that is contained in the message body and go to a website that is either running identity theft (”phishing”) scams or is set up to transfer Trojan horse viruses and other malware onto your computer.

Bruce recommends keeping your anti-virus software up-to-date and to use caution when clicking links in email messages–if you can verify that the email is from a legitimate source, it is still better to copy and paste the URL from the message into your web browser.  For full details, please visit:  http://www.itd.umich.edu/news/2007fall/09102007.html
