ITS Helpdesk must now see a picture ID before doing any work on your computer or your account.  We are sorry for the complication, but we feel it is a necessary step in maintaining account security.

A student ID card or drivers license are acceptable forms of ID.

URGENT: Microsoft Security Updates October 23, 2008

Posted by turnip in : Blogroll , add a comment

Dear Campus Community,

Microsoft has released a critical update for the following Windows products:

Windows XP

Windows server 2000

Windows server 2003

These software versions contain a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to remotely run arbitrary code on the system.

ITS is pushing out the update now to all of your office computers as well as the ITS servers. We are going to start rebooting our servers immediately. Please save any documents you are working on immediately. Once the patch is installed you will have to reboot your computer. It is imperative that you do this as soon as possible. If you have a PC/Server that you are responsible for (including those you may have at home) please apply this patch as soon as possible. If you do not receive a “reboot” notice in the next hour from your computer, which is an indication that the patch has been installed, you can obtain the update by running windows update, or by downloading the update from Microsoft’s website at:

Thank you,

Beware of Links in E-Mail That Spread Viruses July 11, 2008

Have you ever received an email one of the following subject lines?

  • You’ve received a greeting card from a admirer!
  • You’ve received a greeting card from a class-mate!
  • You’ve received a postcard from a colleague!
  • You’ve received a postcard from a family member!
  • You’ve received an ecard from a friend!
  • You’ve received an ecard from a mate!
  • Someone sent you an ecard!
  • According to Bruce Burrell, leader of the U-M Virus Busters, everyone should think twice before clicking any link in these messages.  Even though there are many hoax emails circulating that warn about an increase in these types of ecard virus threats, Bruce advises that this is a real problem.  The email messages themselves do not contain the virus, so they pass through the anti-virus filters on campus.  The problem can happen when you click on any link that is contained in the message body and go to a website that is either running identity theft (”phishing”) scams or is set up to transfer Trojan horse viruses and other malware onto your computer.

Bruce recommends keeping your anti-virus software up-to-date and to use caution when clicking links in email messages–if you can verify that the email is from a legitimate source, it is still better to copy and paste the URL from the message into your web browser.  For full details, please visit:  http://www.itd.umich.edu/news/2007fall/09102007.html

During Spring Break ITS will be switching the Murchie Science Building over from 80211net to UMF_BASIC. All registered computers should automatically connect to it because it will be same network that is already in the University Center, Pavilion, French hall and the Library. However, if it’s not connecting please bring your laptop into 207 MSB, and we can add the network for you.
