You can now connect to MWireless with your Chromebook. ITS does not support this but we did [...]

You can now connect to MWireless with your Chromebook. ITS does not support this but we did manage to get it working. Here is how you do it.

First, if you have already tried to connect you will need to do a little housekeeping. Check the Troubleshooting section at the bottom of this post for more info, then come back to the top to set it up correctly.

Now Let’s get your Chromebook connected.

In the lower right corner of your screen click on the wireless icon located in the status area.

From the menu that pops up, click Settings.

The settings tab will open in Chrome.

From the settings menu, under Internet connection. Click Wi-Fi network and then click MWireless.

The MWireless connection dialog will pop up, from here check the Automatically connect to this network box, then click Connect.

The Join Wi-Fi network dialog box will pop up. Adjust the settings in the box to the following:

EAP method: PEAP

Phase 2 Authentication: Automatic

Server CA certificate: Default

User certificate: None installed

Identity: your_uniqname@umflint.edu

Password: your_LAN_password

Anonymous identity: Leave this blank

Check the Save identity and password box

Uncheck the Share this network with other users box

When you are finished click Connect.

It will take a couple of minutes to connect, this is because of the way the Chromebook interacts with our networks. After a couple of minutes, if you click on the wireless icon in the status area, you will see that you are now connected to the MWireless network.

Try visiting some websites to make sure everything is working correctly.

Troubleshooting

Problem 1: If you already tried to connect you will need to remove the MWireless network from the list of preferred networks. To do this follow these steps:

Go to Settings

Click WiFi Networks

Click Preferred Networks

Click the X next to MWireless

Head back to the top of this post and follow the instructions

Problem 2: You MUST add the MWireless network from the settings page because when you do, you are offered a check box to “Automatically connect to this network” and THIS MUST BE CHECKED.

If you are still having problems please stop by the ITS Helpdesk at 206 MSB and we will work with you to try to get your Chromebook connected.

Today’s did you know is brought you by Kevin Murphy, an ITS Helpdesk student worker.

——————————————————————————–

In recent months the ITS open labs have switched to using new automatic staplers. We did this for multiple reasons the main two being that these staplers are heavy duty and will last much longer and the second being that they are high capacity. The new staplers are built to last and are very strong; they can staple through as many pages as you can fit in the slot (55-65) and will do it neatly. These staplers rarely jam and hold around 5000 staples so you will hardly ever notice it empty or jammed.

Another great feature of these staplers is the depth adjustment lever. It is a red slider located on the side of the stapler. ITS has marked an optimal depth but it can be adjusted by sliding the lever either forward or back. If you choose to adjust the depth please return the slider to the marked line when you are finished. You should also check that the red slider is on the marked line before stapling to ensure a great looking staple job. To make for ease of use we have also drawn on a line for where to line up the left edge of the paper, doing so places a staple in the optimum spot for most people.

While these staplers are much more durable they may fail or jam from time to time, as any mechanical device does. Please do not hesitate to contact the ITS Helpdesk if you are ever having any trouble with the staplers in any of our labs.

ITS is happy to announce that we are now including video with some of our Quicknotes. We have been working on this for a while now and are very excited to provide this new option for gaining assistance to the UM-Flint campus.

What is a Quicknote?

A quicknote provides step-by-step instructions, in most cases including images and/or video. ITS provides Quicknotes on many common technology questions that are supported by ITS. To access the quicknotes please visit www.umflint.edu/helpdesk and look in the bottom right panel for the quicknote categories.

Which Quicknotes have videos?

As of today two of our most common quicknote topics have videos.

Windows 7 Wireless Configuration: http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk/perm/windows/configuring-windows-windows-7-or-vista-to-access-mwireless-wireless-network/

SIS Proxy Access: http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk/perm/sis-proxy-access/video-assistance-for-sis-proxy-access/

What videos are coming?

ITS is currently working on a number of videos for our quicknotes including VPN, printing from a wireless device, and changing your university LAN password.

Do you have a suggestion for a video?

ITS would love to hear what you would like to see video’s for. Please submit your video ideas to the ITS Helpdesk through our Contact Us form located here: http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk/contact-us/

Today’s “Did You Know?” is brought to you by Chad Baunoch, an ITS Helpdesk employee.

————————————————————————————————

There are 24 Papercut print stations available on campus, four of which are color printers. At the beginning of each semester all registered students get 400 print credits to be used at any Papercut print station on campus. This means every registered student has the ability to print up to 400 black and white pages. Every color print uses 6 credits per page which means a student can print up to 66 color pages before needing to add print credits.

If a student uses all 400 credits given to them at the beginning of the semester they also have the ability to purchase more credits for their account. For every five dollars 100 print credits are added to their account. For students that are interested in adding print credits to their account, they can do so through SIS.

To Add Credits:

Login to SIS

Click Personal Information

Click My Campus Computer Account

Click Add Papercut Pages

This method does not require immediate payment. You will be required to pay for any credits added at the cashier’s office before the end of the current semester. This option adds the pages to your print account immediately.

The best news that has come recently is students’ print credits roll over to the next semester. Print credits will rollover from fall to winter, winter to spring, and spring to summer. At the end of the summer semester all print credits are reset back to zero.

For those alumni, faculty, or staff who are interested in printing at the university, can add print credits to their account online as well. Alumni, faculty, and staff interested in adding print credits to their account can do so through www.umflint.edu/its/store.

To Add Credits:

Navigate to www.umflint.edu/its/store in any browser

Click “Click here to request Papercut Funds”

Follow the on screen instructions

This method requires a credit or debit card, cash purchases need to go through 905 NBC during normal business hours. Any Papercut credit purchases for alumni, faculty, or staff will be added within 30 minutes Monday-Friday between 8am and 4:30pm. Credits purchased outside of these hours will be added the next business day.

More information on print credits, Papercut printers, and printing from the web is available here: http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk/perm/category/printing/
