Microsoft Exchange 2007 Update September 11, 2008

Posted by miriw in : New Technologies, Staff News , add a comment

To all Faculty and Staff,

On September 11th, at 11:00 PM, we will begin the migration of everyone’s mailbox to new Microsoft Exchange 2007 mailbox servers. Because this will be a lengthy process, we will need to continue the migration of mailboxes outside of our normal maintenance window. We will be moving mailboxes every weekday evening beginning at 11:00 PM and will finish by 6:00 AM. Once your mailbox has been migrated, the Outlook Web Access interface will look very similar to your Outlook client running on your desktop computer.

If you have any problems, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 766-6804.

Starting Thursday evening September 11th during our normal maintenance window and each subsequent Thursday evening/Friday morning, we will move some users mail boxes until we have moved them all. We anticipate that the entire process will take a  month. Once your mailbox is moved you will have a 2 Gigabyte mailbox instead of the current 150 Megabyte mailbox. You will receive the size limit warning message at 1.8 Gigabytes. At 1.9 Gigabytes you will not be able to send email and at 2 Gigabytes you will not be able to send or receive email until you remove some messages.

When the second floor of French Hall reopened this semester it had not only an entirely new look, but also brand-new, hi-tech equipment.  Instructors and students using 201, 212, 250, or 251 FH will have the privilege of using the new Media Crestron Control System.  The new classroom carts still contain familiar equipment found in the previous A/V Carts and Smart Carts (a computer, DVD/VCR combo, Document Camera), but they are controlled by the new Crestron systems.  Instructors can easily make use of all equipment in the classroom, including overhead projectors and screens, by simply utilizing the touchscreen Crestron controls.  Additional features to aid in the classroom will be added to the Crestron system throughout the semester.

For detailed instruction on how to use the new equipment, instructors can contact MCS at (810)237-6628 or mcs@umflint.edu.

Announcing Web4U in SIS July 13, 2007

Posted by admin in : General News, New Technologies , add a comment

ITS is pleased to announce the new Web4U menu available in the Student Information System (SIS) or www.umflint.edu/sis/ .  Web4U is an option that allows a student to grant access to another person to view their student information/records at the University of Michigan-Flint.

A student can authorize another user, such as a parent or spouse, to view financial aid, registration and/or student account billing information.   The system will send the authorized user email messages containing their own user id, password and basic instructions on how to get into the website.

Students are being informed of this new feature during orientation this summer and the general student body will be notified during the Fall 2007 semester.

To learn more about Web4U, you can view the What is Web4U flyer at http://www.umflint.edu/its/helpdesk/flyers/Web4U.htm.

ITS would like to thank the Registrar, Financial Aid, Academic Advising and the Cashier’s offices for their assistance with this important and exciting project.

ITS sponsored a podcasting activity for Take Your Child To Work Day, Thursday, April 26, 2007.  The event was held from 10am to 5pm in the ITS Technology Center, which was recently moved from WSW to 207 MSB.  Approximately 16 students who were visiting campus with their parent enjoyed learning about podcasting and viewing kid-friendly podcasts at PBS.org and Disney.com.  Several students forged bravely into the world of podcasting and recorded their thoughts about the events of the day and other topics.

To listen to the podcasts, please visit http://ww2.umflint.edu/RadioITS/ and click the link for the “Take Your Child to Work Day - Podcasting Activity.”  You will need Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox to view the RSS feed.  For more information about podcasting and “RSS”,  please consult http://ww2.umflint.edu/its/projects/podcasting.htm and http://ww2.umflint.edu/its/helpdesk/flyers/RSS.pdf
