Daylight Savings Time and Outlook Calendar entries February 26, 2007

Posted by admin in : Expert Advice from the ITS HelpDesk, General News , add a comment

You may have noticed Friday that several changes occurred to your Outlook calendar. This was due to a Microsoft patch installed early Friday morning to address the change in daylight savings time. Please take the time to examine your appointments for the dates of March 11th through March 31st; some entries may still be an hour off. If while looking over your personal calendar you identify incorrect appointment times, please adjust the entries as necessary. Note: If the faulty appointment involves more than one invitee, the meeting organizer will have to make the adjustments.

Important - please do not correct public folder calendars at this time, we have not applied the patch to this area yet.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused over the past couple of weeks. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the ITS Helpdesk @ 766-6804.

The ITS HelpDesk recommends the following for personally-owned computers:  If you have configured your Windows OS computer to automatically accept Microsoft updates, you should be up-to-date. Otherwise, please visit Microsoft’s Daylight Saving Time Help and Support Center.  For Mac OS computers, please consult http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305056.

Computer Security 101 Exam now available! February 12, 2007

At 8 am this morning, the Computer Security 101 Exam was made available on Blackboard to all current students.  Anyone who passes the exam with a 100% will be entered in a drawing to receive one of the following prizes (quantity to be awarded is listed in parentheses):

Dell Inspirion 1501 Laptop (1)
iPod Nano (1)
Biometric Flash Drive (2)
2 GB Thumbdrive (10)
1 GB Thumbdrive (9)

The first 25 students to pass with a 100% will automatically receive a 1 GB thumbdrive in addition to being entered in the drawing for the opportunity to win one of the above prizes. While the chance to be one of the first 25 students has already passed, there is still plenty of time to complete the exam and receive a chance to win one of the other great prizes!  The final drawing for the prizes listed above will be completely random, so no matter when you successfully complete the exam (during the week of February 12-18 ) you will have a chance to win.  Make sure you take the practice exam, available at ww2.umflint.edu/security101/, so you can get a 100%!  After you’ve completed the practice, head on over to Blackboard (http://bb.umflint.edu) to take the real test (you must get a 100% to be entered in the drawing).

If you don’t get a 100% the first time  you take the test, don’t worry.  You will be able to take the test multiple times, until you receive a 100%.  Once you receive a 100%, you do not need to take the test again.  No matter how many times you take the test and receive a 100% you will only be entered once in the drawing (for example, taking the test 10 times and receiving a 100% will not mean you have 10 entries in the drawing for the prizes).

All students who win a prize will be notified via email on March 5, 2007.  The list of winners will also be posted on ww2.umflint.edu/security101/.  Prizes will be available for pick-up in the main ITS office (207 MSB) during normal business hours (if you win make sure you bring your student ID to pick up your prize).
