21 February 2008, Flint, Michigan:
The snow on the curbs of Flint today is real, unlike the white-covered dirt mounds from the summer when Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, and the cast and crew of Semi-Pro were in Flint and on the University of Michigan-Flint campus filming the movie. Tonight is the Flint area premiere of Semi-Pro.

At right is a photo showing my daughter Erin and I welcoming Woody to campus. Woody spent about thirty minutes talking with our students and giving autographs. We never got near Will. kayswoody.jpg

19 February 2008 , Flint, Michigan:

I am proud to report that the Corporation for National and Community Service last week named the University of Michigan-Flint to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said, “Americans rely on our higher education system to prepare students for citizenship and the workforce. We look to institutions like these to provide leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic and economic future of our country.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a program that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of higher education and community-based organizations. The view of Saginaw Street from my office is spectacular, showing a downtown moving forward. The sky may be gray and the temperature cold but the warmth of new activity is in the air. If you have not been downtown recently please come. Enjoy the local eateries. Visit the businesses. See what is happening on campus. Walk on down Kearsley Street and see how the new residence hall is coming. You will be impressed.

Did you know that Flint is home to the second oldest Shakespeare Club in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1888? I did not know this fact until I hosted the group for brunch today prior to their viewing of the University of Michigan-Flint theatre prouction of “The Winter’s Tale,” directed by Professor Carolyn Gillespie. My daughter and I saw the performance last week. It was wonderful, featuring a great set and wonderful costuming.

16 February 2008, Flint Michigan, 3rd Avenue Baptist Church:

Students from the University of Michigan-Flint and Kettering University met today at 3rd Avenue Baptist Church to begin a petition drive to change the name of 3rd Avenue to University Avenue. Mayor Williamson, Councilman Neely, Bob Nichols, Dan Kildee, and I kicked off the event. This is another example of how Flint is becoming a “College Town.” Mayor Williamson provided an incentive to the 2 teams: $200 to the team that collected the most signatures and $100 to the second place team. The teams generously donated their winnings to the church.
