Have you read The Michigan Times lately? Our student newspaper (”the student voice of the University of Michigan-Flint”) is filled with news about campus and the community. I congratulate Editor in Chief Mike Stechschulte and his staff for focusing attention on the University of Michigan-Flint campus and the city. To read the paper online go: http://www.themichigantimes.com. I look forward to future issues, even if they take on the administration!

On behalf of the students who work hard to put out a good newspaper, thanks for noticing the changes they’re making.
They’re always looking for good stories, and photos.
And they have big ideas about making the Times Web site a great place to visit for frequent news updates.
Part of the credit should go to the Board of Student Publications, too. They’ve struck a great balance of leadership and support.
I look forward to reading more news in your blog, and in our newspaper.
We have many Southwestern Academy students at UM-Flint, I’m sure. Perhaps they would like to learn more about the Denounce the “N” word initiative that has taken place here. The Michigan Times student newspaper should, in my opinion, feature a story about our effort. Events are unfolding day by day and it has become truly exciting to behold. Maurice Hood addressed the recent NAACP dinner and awards ceremony concerning the latest news about our initiative. I was informed that Flint City Manager, Daryll Buchanan, also spoke to the crowd and he praised the very positive results we’ve been seeing now for a month; it seems as if we have a full calendar pertaining to the campaign. Importantly, we’re going to be featured on an MPR/NPR show in the very near future. Mr. Vincent Duffy, news director with MPR in Ann Arbor, visited the school where I spent one year as a Fulbright U.S. Dept. of State teacher: Norkem Park H.S., Kempton Park, South Africa. He was impressed with what he saw there–and he also gathered information as to the very real needs the school has in regard to lack of computers. NPHS is very much like my own Flint SW Academy, having almost exactly the same number of students and staff (although they have only one counselor and we have four).
It has been very refreshing working on this important, sensitive project…and it goes without saying that it has been exhausting too! Again, perhaps your newspaper could feature us with a story that captures our spirit, our strength and resilience, and our courage to push this thing through. Changing language is never easy…
Thanks Mike and John.
Mike, I gladly add my thanks to the Board of Student Publications.
John, I will pass your suggestion on to the editor of The Michigan Times.
