Materials for Workshop: “What is Shared Governance?” held Monday February 13, 2017

Below are the handouts, powerpoint materials, and documents discussed at the AAUP Workshop:

  • Powerpoint materials (see your umflint e-mail on ‘workshop materials’ from the aaup to obtain the password to open the file). This file is what was shown and discussed at the workshop. It is a presentation given by Michael DeCesare at the National AAUP Shared Governance Conference in October 2016. Three pages were removed for irrelevance to the UM-Flint structure.
  • National AAUP “Statement on the Government of Colleges and Universities” of 1966. This is the most important governance policy document drafted by the AAUP. It has been used to adapt portions to the U of M Regents Bylaws and Faculty Handbook. It is considered the ‘gold standard’ of governance in higher education.
  • Principles of Faculty Involvement in Institutional Governance. This was compiled by the Senate of U of M to pull together the most important governance policies for U of M faculty from the Regents Bylaws and U of M Faculty Handbook. It is applicable to all three campuses.
  • Open Governance Resolution: This was passed by the U of M Senate in 2012 as a statement regarding expectations of transparency in the governance of the university.
  • University of Michigan Senate-Adopted Policy on Academic Freedom:
  • National AAUP 2016 Report on a Review of Governance at UM-Flint:
